Virtual body exposure therapy for adolescent anorexia nervosa patients.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious, potentially life-threatening mental disorder and is associated with a high relapse and chronicity rate. Body image disturbance is one of the core symptoms of AN and represents a central maintaining factor of eating disorder symptomatology. In AN therapy, interventions to improve body image are therefore essential to improve the chances of recovery and reduce the risk of relapse. However, specialized therapy options as well as therapeutic services are limited. Therefore, an effective and scalable form of therapy is absolutely necessary. Therefore, the aim of the planned pilot project is to develop an innovative virtual reality (VR) based body exposure therapy and to investigate its feasibility, acceptance and strength of effects in adolescent female AN patients. The results to be achieved have the potential to lead to a groundbreaking and widely available improvement of the overall moderate therapeutic success in adolescent AN and thus to sustainably improve the care of AN.
